Charity Battle of the Bands jams in Support of Planned Parenthood
Locals poured into The Monkey House on main street Tuesday, April 19 for three hours of fusion, rock, and blues jams.
In a competition between No Showers on Vacation, Bobby Coe & The Hive, and All Night Boogie Band for a slot at the Waking Windows Festival this May, No Showers on Vacation won and will perform at Waking Windows Saturday May 14th.
With captivating performances from each group, No Showers on Vacation won over the crowd with a mix of covers and original tracks, tying in Phish-inspired jams throughout the largely instrumental set.
Bobby Coe & The Hive played a mix of rock originals with funky crowd pleasing covers like Vulfpeck’s Dean Town, while All Night Boogie Band showcased blues classics and originals like “River.”
The event was organized by Jocelyn Mailloux, a former employee for Waking Windows. She originally planned the event for 2020, and resumed it this year with support from staff at Higher Ground and Waking Windows 2022, according to Mailloux.
Mailloux organized the event in association with Planned Parenthood, and arranged for all door proceeds to be donated to the group.
Over $300 was raised Tuesday, according to Mailloux.
“I truly believe that everything [Planned Parenthood] offers is great and the fact that they offer affordable health care to anyone, and have so many good services setup, that I think it's really important to encourage and support that and help it grow and continue to maintain what it does,” Mailloux said.
Band members from every group shared the sentiment, and Planned Parenthood held an informational desk next to the bar inside the Monkey House throughout the show, signing up volunteers and telling local barhoppers about the mission.
Emmett Lürrsen, the No Showers’ guitarist and singer, said that the group was happy to play the event and contribute to the cause.
Waking Windows will return to the city from May 13 to May 15 in partnership with local businesses to put on the two-day festival. Headlining groups will include Japanese Breakfast, Dinosaur Jr., Kikagaku Moyo, and many more, according to the festival’s website.
