Catherine is a midwest transplant majoring in History with a concentration in European History at the University of Vermont. In their free time, they like to hike, write poetry, and sing opera.

My name is Aubrey Weaver, I am a sophomore Political Science Major! I am originally from Littleton, Colorado, and excited to learn more about my new home Vermont.

Grace Sherwood

Hello, my name is Grace Sherwood and this summer I am interning with the Capital News Service at UVM. I will be a senior this year, my major is Political Science. I am so excited to not only learn about the big things going on in the VT legislature, but do my favorite thing to do as a political science major and talk about it!

Kira Corasanti is currently a Junior at the University of Vermont studying Environmental Studies with a minor in Reporting and Documentary Storytelling. She enjoys backpacking, skiing, reading and dancing whenever she can. She is excited to translate her passion for the environment and writing into Vermont news!

 
 
 

Managing Staff

Murphy Anderson | Managing Editor - Winooski News

Murphy Anderson, MPH, is a health communications project manager at North Dakota State University. She also copywrites, designs websites, and consults for nonprofits and community leaders. Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Murphy lives in Winooski with her boyfriend and cavapoo, Lily. She looks forward to learning more about Winooski and engaging with UVM students through her role as editor.

Katie Enns | GIS Specialist

Katie Enns is a recent UVM Alum with a passion for GIS. During her time at UVM, Katie made her way in the GIS community, working as a teaching assistant for Introduction to GIS and Introduction to Python for multiple semesters. She also integrated GIS into her undergraduate thesis, working with Chittenden Area Transportation Management Association (CATMA) to visualize their survey data and discover transportation patterns of UVM’s faculty and staff, which will help inform better practices and reduce carbon emissions. CATMA continues to use the methodology Enns set up to analyze future surveys and track changes over time. This success aided Katie in her admission to Claremont Graduate University, where she will study Information Systems and Technology with a GIS concentration beginning Fall 2022. Katie hopes to use her skills to produce strong statistical analyses of environmentally related data that will inform policy and combat climate change.

Brittany Patterson | Audio Journalism Instructor

Brittany Patterson is the deputy managing editor of Vermont Public Radio. Previously, she covered energy and environment for West Virginia Public Broadcasting and the Ohio Valley ReSource collaborative. Prior to that she worked in Washington, D.C. for E&E News. She has taught audio news production at St. Michael's College and West Virginia University. Her work has been published in NPR, Scientific American, AP and TheAtlantic.com.

Carolyn Shapiro | Print Journalism Instructor

Carolyn Shapiro is a freelance journalist and longtime reporter and writer at daily newspapers from upstate New York to southeastern Virginia. She has penned stories for The New York Times, Boston Globe, Seven Days and FedTech magazine. She also teaches advanced journalism at Champlain College in Burlington. She loves to talk about journalism and, when she's not doing that, walking her her two boxers and eating Vermont cheese.

Emily Sheftman | Outreach Coordinator (She/Her)

Emily Sheftman graduated from UVM in Spring 2022. While at UVM she studied political science and history. She was also involved with the internship program. Participating in legislative research, interning with a State Senator and working as the TA for the legislative communities of practice.

Justin Trombly | Editor

Justin Trombly is the editor of Community News Service. He coordinates with our media partners, workshops stories with student reporters and helps build CNS' effort to strengthen Vermont journalism. He's been a reporter at VTDigger, the Tampa Bay Times, the Buffalo News and local papers in upstate New York.

Richard Watts | Coordinator (He/Him)

Richard Watts is a former journalist and political campaign manager who now studies and teaches courses in journalism and public policy at the University of Vermont. Richard is the co-director of the Reporting & Documentary Storytelling Program, directs the Center for Research on Vermont, and coordinates internships for the College of Arts & Sciences.
