Winooski marks centennial year with Legacy Campaign

As Winooski approaches the celebration of its 100th year, the city has successfully undergone a rebranding initiative and is currently preparing a Legacy Campaign to honor its residents and their heritage, according to Winooski’s Communications Coordinator Paul Sarne.

The revised City Seal, which captures the red buildings of the Winooski Falls Mill and the rushing waters of the Winooski River, gives a modern twist to the token historical image at the community’s center.

Sarne managed the city’s rebranding effort, working to ensure it aligned with the community’s values and vision. The upcoming Legacy Campaign will “highlight community stories through the lens of our identity as ‘Vermont's Opportunity City,” Sarne said.

Winooski upholds a reputation as a haven for people of all cultures, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds and their Legacy Campaign will seek to reflect this advantageous diversity.

“For almost 100 years, Winooski has welcomed strivers - people looking to build a better life for themselves and their families. We’re a small city where neighbors know each other. We’re a city where all of our kids learn together, play together, and grow together. We’re a community where everyone can participate in city government, in neighborhood gatherings, and in our lively downtown. We’re always striving to improve our city and to welcome our next new neighbors,” the City of Winooski website states.

According to Sarne, COVID-19 has slowed progress on this initiative, but more details will be revealed in the coming months.

“We'll have more information on the specifics this fall,” Sarne said.

The city of Winooski was founded March 7, 1922, marking almost 100 years of maintaining an environment of hope and opportunity for all, Sarne said.
